spring un-break

the funny thing about "spring break" is that it's never, ever a break for the stay-at-home mom :). Never fear, however... I didn't lose my mind until about Thursday afternoon, and then it was time to take Pete to soccer practice... perfect timing, because we ALL joined in and played a little soccer.... and that stuffed down anger (impatience, being a crappy mom sometimes, misbehavin' little crazy people, etc) blew away in the wind. Phew!

Anyway, yes, it's been a wild week. Kids off school, but me with a test to take on Tuesday, and Zach with a full schedule of classes and exams. So after my test we (me + kids) took off for our hometown to visit with my mother-in-law and then to see my grandparents. We spent the night at my parent's house and then had a fun day playing with my nutty and hilarious and refreshing friend Alli and her two awesome kids. We haven't seen them in forever! We lounged around in the hot tub and pretended we were on an exotic vacation, and it almost worked :).

I did get to run out to my favorite running store and picked up some NEW running shoes, because it appears that this running habit is going to stick! I had three days of no running while I had to deal with tests and traveling with the kids, and I was seriously a grumpy person without even a short little run. Another half-marathon is calling my name in November... who would've guessed? I love it. What the heck. There are worse things, I suppose :).

We headed back to our little country home after our time away, happy to see daddy but sad to see him leave for class. Yesterday the kids and I hung out in Chapel Hill and ate cupcakes and played for a loooong time at the playground. Today we're doing laundry. Mounds and mounds of laundry. Also, I haven't been to the grocery store in weeks and let me say thank GOD for my freezer and all the good things in there to eat :). I would be perfectly happy in life eating cheese, apples, cereal, and wine, but for some reason others in my family don't agree with that and want actual meals. Whatever!

Also, we're Christians (even if we're considered crazy liberal ones, we still love some Jesus in this house), so today we're talking about the death of Jesus and what that means for us. We can either over-complicate or over-simplify this event, but it all comes down to teaching us about Grace and denying ourselves to love others more, better, deeper. Jesus taught that and we (knowing that we'll fall short every single time) try to emulate that.

On Sunday we'll celebrate that we have Light in the world... that hope always conquers darkness, even when we can't see it. Even when we fail. The Light never goes out! And we can reflect that light, doing our best to love others well. And then, when we fall short of even that, we know that Grace waits for us, forgives us, and puts us back on our feet to try again.

“Hope is not about proving anything. It's about choosing to believe this one thing, that love is bigger than any grim, bleak shit anyone can throw at us.” --Anne Lamott

So to all 5 of you who still read this blog, Happy Easter! Lots of love from your Traveling with Mercy family.

  3. Happy Easter! I'm sorry the week was stressful, but it sounds like you had a lot of fun at the same time, too! That's great you had a chance to get away for a bit.

I would love to say someday I did a marathon, but I hate running. You give me hope that can change for me too :-)
